Meet the Team

Jacqueline “Jackie” Barnwell – General Manager/Owner
Growing up on Hilton Head Island, Jackie came of age working the kitchens and dining rooms in one of America’s great culinary destinations. Starting off bussing tables, she quickly moved to the dining room floor where she developed a talent for delivering exceptional customer service with genuine southern hospitality. Over the next thirteen years, she mastered both front and back of house skills while climbing the ranks to management of restaurants in Charleston and Mt Pleasant. After a five year move into the accounting field, Jackie returned to the hospitality industry with her husband William to open a restaurant of their own. Her dedication to providing a warm and inviting atmosphere has revived a community gathering spot, where locals and travelers alike can’t help but reminisce on treasured memories while creating new ones.
William “Beau” Barnwell – Owner
A tenth generation Lowcountry native, William brings an essentialist approach to traditional sea island cuisine, staying true to methods passed along from his grandparents and a childhood steeped in our local fields, creeks, and kitchens. A 2018 graduate of the Culinary Institute of Charleston’s Food and Beverage Operations program, William got his start working in restaurants 24 years earlier while a student at Charleston Southern University. He soon after answered the call to military service and spent the next two decades immersed in cultures and cuisines from around the world. Upon retirement, he returned to his Lowcountry roots where he, along with his wife and seasoned restaurant veteran, Jackie, made good on a decades old dream to reopen his grandfather’s country store. The new Roxbury Mercantile, now transformed into a warm and inviting restaurant, continues to provide locals and travelers alike the same hospitality and provisions it did when the Barnwell family first opened it nearly a century ago.
